Uses: 1,4-Butanediol has a wide range of uses. In the United States and Western Europe, more than half of 1,4-Butanediol is used to produce tetrahydrofuran, followed by gamma-butyrolactone and the rapidly developing engineering plastic polybutylene terephthalate; 4-Butanediol is used as a chain extender and polyester raw material for the production of polyurethane elastomers and soft polyurethane foams; esters of 1,4-Butanediol are good chemical plasticizers for cellulose, polyvinyl chloride, polyacrylates and polyesters. 1,4-Butanediol has good hygroscopicity and flexibility, and can be used as a softener and absorbent for gelatin, cellophane and other waste paper. It can also be used to prepare pyrrolidone derivatives such as NN-methylpyrrolidone-2-one and N-vinylpyrrolidone. It is also used to prepare vitamin B6, pesticides, herbicides, solvents, plasticizers, lubricants, humidifiers, softeners, adhesives and brighteners in the electroplating industry.
